BioWare Becomes its Own Label, Good for UO?

According to Gamasutra, BioWare has become its own label under EA.

This is really big news.

What’s happening is that there is now a “superdivision” of sorts called EA Labels, and that will have the labels EA Games, EA Sports, EA Play, and BioWare under it. In the past, BioWare was under EA Games, and now it’s been given a much more prominent role. Frank Gibeau is heading up EA Labels – he formerly ran EA Games.

This is part of a bigger initiative on EA’s part, according to EA’s CEO:

“We’re focusing on building our intellectual properties/franchises into year-round business,” he wrote today.

“We are already seeing big returns on our investment in change. That’s why this is precisely the right time to update our organization.”

And yesterday, BioWare San Francisco was created out of EA2D. The EA2D Studio created Dragon Age Legends and Mirror’s Edge 2D, so it makes sense given that BioWare is taking over all of the RPG and MMORPG titles.

As the article mentions, this is now the sixth BioWare location, or maybe studio depending on your view:
* BioWare San Francisco
* BioWare Edmonton
* BioWare Montreal
* BioWare Austin (Star Wars: The Old Republic)
* BioWare Mythic in Fairfax Virginia (Ultima Onilne, Darkage of Camelot, Warhammer Online)
* BioWare Customer Service office (Ireland)

What does this mean for UO? Really good things I believe. To me, it means that full control over UO will be handled by RPG/MMORPG folks from BioWare. I think it was already happening to an extent. BioWare has already shown an enthusiasm for the Ultima franchise, work is being done on UO to grow it going into the future, plus the Ultima Forever project, and on Dark Age of Camelot. Dark Age of Camelot recently received a new website at DarkAgeofCamelot.com and has dropped the Mythic label, carrying only the Origin.com, EA, and BioWare labels. It’s similar to UltimaForever.com. BioWare appears to be taking full control of its franchises.

I was actually going to sit on this for a few days since I had another article I was working on that tied into it, but it really deserves its own story.

Update on Ultima Online Account Migration

So yesterday we received a lot of information about the account migration.

It has now started as of a few hours ago, according to the UO Herald:

The account migration has started, and the account center is offline until the 11th of August. If you have any queries please see the common questions posted earlier this week.

Should you venture over to Ultima-Registration.com, you will be redirected to the Account Migration FAQ.

And as a part of that, I just received an email as did a few other people I know, stating that they are converting our accounts to Origin.com accounts:

EA Accounts Moving to Origin.com Accounts

By the way, that $4.99 sale mentioned at the bottom is pretty good – check out the $4.99 games at Origin.com.

Ultima Online – Account Migration

Calvin Crowner, UO’s producer, has posted some information about a migration that UO’s accounting system is undergoing, starting tomorrow and lasting up through

Greetings,

Ultima Online is migrating to a new account center and billing system. These changes are essential to the future and progress of Ultima Online.

So what will change?

On the surface the look and feel of the Account Center will change. Your page, as always, will be filled with personal entitlement (e.g. gametime, expansions, boosters) and other account information.

Electronic Arts is transitioning to a more robust payment system. Ultima Online’s current payment system is built on old technology, and if we want to insure the success of the product we need a more advanced platform. In addition, the account center will ultimately broaden payment options for our European players.

An additional feature is the capacity for trial accounts to immediately join the game without waiting for the full 14 days.

More importantly, for recurring players, we will have a fresh and solid platform that will effectively and correctly track account age.

Finally, the system will be fully integrated with the functionality of broader Electronic Arts. If you’ve created a Nucleus account with Electronic Arts, you should be familiar with the interface and process of viewing and interaction with your player account information. If you are not sure what any of this means, we’ve put together some common questions you may have.

Is your billing and account information secure?

Absolutely. One of the key reasons for updates to the current registration page and account center is to take advantage of the increased security offered by new web technologies. The first step in this transition is to make certain all your account information is safe.

All changes and updates are in line with Electronic Arts Terms of Service.

Thank you for your continued support and we’ll see you in the game!

If you read the article, you’ll see a link to an Account Migration FAQ at UOHerald.com.

Important Notes:
* The account center goes offline on August 5, 2011, and will be back up August 11, 2011.
* We can still play the game
* Servers will undergo extended downtime on August 10, 2011
* Another acknowledgement from Electronic Arts that we still exist!

If you are concerned about accounts that renew during the downtime and grandfathered houses and the like, Cal posted this message on Stratics:

Good point here. We actually have taken a LOT of time on the backend to make sure this doesn’t happen. We know that the majority of our players put time into their homes, so we taken a few precautions to make sure this does not happen.

Key Changes and Updates:
* Account Center will change – I think this is not as important as some of the others, although it definitely feels dated and could use some work, especially in regards to new players.
* Transitioning to a new system, the overall Electronic Arts. This probably means we’ll access things through Origin.com, which is what EA is planning to use as its portal for all of its online gaming needs, whether it’s browser-based games or MMOs or game stores.
* New payment options for European players
* Trial accounts can be turned into regular accounts without waiting 14 days, once payment is made.
* Account age will be properly tracked.
* Increased security.
* It sounds like you might be using your email information to login. I hope not – I have several accounts tied to one email address.
* It also sounds like you can migrate everything to one single Master EA account. This would be nice for those players with a lot of accounts.

Speculation:
* Since it is an overhaul of the account system, we might see houses decaying that should have already decayed, including those on accounts that are inactive or banned, but were somehow still flagged as being active.
* Could help make it easier to use UOGameCodes.com and remove some of the confusion that sometimes arises. In the past, developers have spoken of how difficult it is to get something added to UOGameCodes.com. Maybe they’ll bring UOGameCodes.com under this.
* Might mean that the EA game cards we can buy in various stores might be able to be used with UO game time or UOGameCodes.com purchases.
* Should fix all of the MyUO problems, such as when people check the profiles of other players when considering them for guilds, etc.
* Might also be a sign of work being done on UOHerald, preferably to convert it back to UO.com, similar to Dark Age of Camelot’s recent migration from CamelotHerald.com to DarkAgeofCamelot.com, complete with a website design overhaul.

Story: Demise of the Defiler

Yesterday, we got a large update on the Stygian Abyss-related storyline that is focused on the Gargoyle Queen Zhah. For a little more on Zhah, see the UO Guide entry for Zhah.

Below is a brief excerpt.

Written by Vincent Hatcher

It had all come down to this.

Zhah took a deep breath and reached into the pouch at her side. Pulling out a bottle, she stared at the dark, murky liquid within. It looked as disgusting as it smelled and, undoubtedly, would probably taste the same. The various components they had mixed during the empowerment ritual had created the substance and, if the ancient documents were true, it would grant her enough temporary power to destroy the Defiler’s protective poison shield.

Steeling herself, she popped the cork held the bottle up to her lips, drinking deeply. The potion was vile, and her initial reaction was to vomit. But she drank it all, dropping the bottle to the ground. Warmth flowed through her body as the potion began to take effect. She felt stronger, almost intoxicated, as power coursed through her very being.

It was time.

Stepping forward, she raised her staff, pointing it towards the imprisoned Defiler. The small army of adventurers that had chosen to stand and fight beside her tensed in unison, preparing for battle.

Stratics – Publish 71 Content Contest

UO Stratics announced a few days ago, a new video contest. It’s focused on Ultima Online Publish 71 additions. It’s only fitting – Publish 71 is one of the more larger/memorable publishes in recent history that wasn’t tied to a specific add-on/booster pack. It’s also a good (hopefully) indication of which way UO is headed – more bug fixes, more tweaks to existing content and issues, and building up of existing content.

Anyway, here are the brief rules for the Publish 71 Content Contest
* Must be tutorial-style video
* Must be at least 5 minutes long
* Must abide by YouTube and Stratics Rules of Conduct
* Must be based on Publish 71 focused content

Prizes:
1st Place: 30 Days Gametime
2nd Place: Grand Bazaar Code
3rd Place: High Seas Booster
